Mark W. Smith is the senior manager for social media marketing at USA TODAY. At USA TODAY, he is responsible for shaping the overall social marketing strategy, identifying new social platforms and working with the newsroom to facilitate a cohesive social presence.
Prior to coming to USA TODAY, he was a Web editor and technology columnist at the Detroit Free Press for four years, where he built the newspaper’s social platforms. In Detroit, he also covered consumer technology and the social Web. His technology writing has also appeared in USA TODAY, the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and dozens of other U.S. newspapers.
He has also developed and taught a social media course for journalists and marketers at Central Michigan University and a Web journalism course at Washtenaw Community College.
In 2010, Smith was honored as the Young Journalist of the Year by the Central Michigan University Journalism Hall of Fame.
Smith is a graduate of Central Michigan University where he majored in photojournalism. He has also worked at the Grand Rapids Press and the Jackson Citizen Patriot.
